We as members of the Royal Canadian Legion, strive to keep alive the memory of the 117,000 men and women who paid the supreme sacrifice in the service of Canada.
This goal is achieved through our annual Poppy Campaign, which is the foundation of our Remembrance Program. Our Legions also organize the Remembrance Day services throughout the country. We provide Canadians with the opportunity to Remember by wearing a poppy, and also to participate in the Remembrance Day services.
Because of the generosity of our fellow Canadians, we can ensure the care and respect of our veterans and their dependants. Through this Campaign and your generosity, we can also provide much needed medical equipment to all who need it within our communities.
The Poppy Campaign is an obligation we accept upon membership to the Royal Canadian Legion; to never forget those who have gone before us.
We foster this Remembrance to the leaders of tomorrow, our youth, by distributing poppies and literature, and also through sponsorship  of Poster and Literary Contest in our communities.
It is with great pride that the Poppy Chairman, Sandy O’Donnell and 1st Vice-President, Doug Cosman, of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #20 presented Margaret McLaughlin the Vice Principal of Sussex Elementary School with 5 copies of the book, "What We Remember". Each book is a collection of six true Canadian stories written especially for children from Kindergarten to Grade 3, to help teach them about the significance of the Poppy and the importance of Remembrance. The Sussex Legion Br. #20 was able to purchase 24 of the books using monies from the Poppy Trust Fund. The other books are being donated to each of the following schools: Apohaqui Elementary, Christian, Sussex Corner Elementary, and to the Sussex Library. This is a project spearheaded by the Canadian Battlefields Foundation and partnered with the Royal Canadian Legion with the aim of putting copies of "What We Remember" in every elementary school in Canada. |
Remembrance Day shall remain and be reverently observed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of each year by us and our successors.
Lest We Forget
Money donated during The Royal Canadian Legion's annual Poppy-Remembrance Campaign is placed in public trust funds. Some of the many ways this money is used to improve life for people in your community include:
providing assistance to needy ex-service members and their families
purchasing medical equipment and appliances for community health facilities
paying for medical research and training
building affordable housing for veterans and senior citizens
paying for bursaries for needy students
providing support services to senior citizens (meals-on-wheels, drop-in centres, etc...)
